Addressing Depression

Depression is one of the most common mental health problems in the world today and in these chaotic times, it may be worsening. While medications can be effective in helping you feel better (please talk to your doctor), there are other things you can do to ease depression. Let’s start with the basics.

1) Do not sleep too often or too much. Staying in bed or taking naps throughout the day can actually worsen depression and make it much harder to cope. Try your hardest to wake up at the same time each morning and go to sleep at the same time every night. This may be difficult, but it will become easier once you get into a routine.

2) Eat well. A healthy and balanced diet will not only help the way you feel, but will also improve your thought patterns. Eat regularly and aim to eat 3 balanced meals each day. Quality food is vital indoor for your mind and body to work properly.

3) Be kind to yourself. Treat yourself to things that are calming and will improve your mood. Scented candles, bubble baths, and a tranquil environment can help you feel better. So can walking outside, meeting up with a friend or family member, or starting that project you’ve been putting off. Also, don’t be afraid to tell someone you are struggling and need their support.

4) Practice self-acceptance and self-compassion. Do not let others define you. Get to know yourself and honor yourself for who you are and not who others would like you to be. We are often afraid to do that because we often think if we don’t please others, they will leave us behind and we’ll be alone. But being the real you is actually so much easier, more joyful, more real. None of us are perfect and everyone has strengths and weaknesses. You can accept both in yourself. And actually this skill allows you to accept the good and not so good in others. Everyone in this world has something very important to offer, and everyone is entitled to respect.

Depression can be overwhelming and take time to overcome. Know that taking a small step each day of one of the above activities will help move you towards healing.
